Information for Doctors

One of the goals of a guideline is to describe examination procedures in a way that maximizes the diagnostic information obtained while minimizing the use of resources employed.

Guidelines should neither describe examinations tailored to individual institutions nor serve as rigid rules. Furthermore, guidelines should not contain or establish barely acceptable examination methods.

The following guidelines are summaries of scientific knowledge and expert opinions regarding nuclear medicine studies and treatments.

Contrary to the English usage of the term guidelines, in German “Leitlinien“ and “Richtlinien“ have two distinct meanings. “Leitlinien” refers to practice guidelines that clinicians should bear in mind, though they must not be followed as they are only recommendations. “Richtlinien“ are legally binding. Therefore, if not followed, will lead to sanctions.
